LOOM WEAVING EXPLODES AT MANKAYAN
-Kristi Anne Bolislis
In the Cordillera region, some people in Sapid, Mankayan, Benguet, use backstrap weaving. The entire process of weaving for daily use is a traditional and women use it as a ritual. The weavers can only weave the traditional cloth of the locality with the use of blackstrap loom. The woven cloth is used for bags, purse, clothing, decorations and others. Aside from their practical function, hand weaving textile is also associated with traditional religion ritual.
Weaving is one of the traditional art industries practiced by many people not only in the Philippines but also in other countries like China and Japan . In Benguet, specifically at Sapid, Mankayan, loom weaving has now become the main business of the citizens specially the unemployed women to supplement their income.
Loom weaving is done by interlacing two or more sets of fibers of woof and warp on a loom .The loom consists of a framework for holding a set of yarns under tension in order for the weft yarn to be inserted when a heddle rod, rather than fingers, lifts the taut yarns. The interlacing process is weaving; the tension device is the loom.
Hand weaving, the queen of the handicraft and perhaps the oldest is most widespread in use, from the heaviest lancing to the finest fabrics.

HOME AND CULTURE
Get your house in order!
-Kristi Anne B. Bolislis
Green spring cleaning tips for all households.
You probably already recycle, reduce, reuse, and try to do your part for the planet. With spring almost in full bloom and Earth Day right around the corner, now is the perfect time to welcome the season with some spring cleaning greening.
Avoid indoor air pollutants Household cleaning products and interior decorations (e.g., carpets, wallpaper, paints and stains) are the main culprit of indoor air pollution, which can be up to 100 times worse than outdoor toxins. Vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, soda water, salt, vegetable soap, and tea tree oil are great, all-natural cleaners. They are surprisingly strong for toxic-free cleaners and won’t pollute the air inside your home. Keeping house plants around will also help to absorb some of the toxic chemicals already in the air.
Ban disposables You may already be doing your part by using green cleaning products, but the most wasteful thing you can do with them is eat up an entire roll of paper towels in the process. Choose sponges and microfiber towels or rags over paper towels, and trade in your Swiffer for a traditional long-lasting mop and broom.
Air dry Extend the life of your clothes and linens by hanging them out to dry. Substitute borax or half a cup of white vinegar for bleach and use biodegradable detergents. Always run a full load of laundry, choose cold over the hot cycle, and if you must use the dryer, make sure that the lint trap has been cleaned out since the last load. You may even want to wash it. With soap!
Now is also the time to clear out your dryer’s vent hose. The lint that accumulates in the hose will make drying slower, waste energy by making your dryer less efficient, and can even be a fire hazard! If you don’t know how to do this, you may want to leave it to a professional. Happy cleaning

In other words, it is very necessary to pay attention to the swimming lesson for beginners and ensure that the proper swimming technique is being adopted. The swimming workout tips given below will also come handy to beginners.
Beginners Swimming Tips
Beginners Swimming Tips
- In the beginning, you should not try to over attempt, in terms of the duration of your swimming session as well as its pace. It is advisable to maintain a slow and comfortable pace to start off. Don’t swim for more than 15-20 minutes in the initial stages.
- As a beginner, swimming three or four times per week, that too for 15-20 minutes at a stretch, will give you the best results.
- Throughout your swimming session, it is advisable to keep a constant track of your heart rate. This is to ensure that you are not over-stressing yourself and are in the right training zone.
- If you are feeling tired and fatigue, switch over to low intensity strokes, like sidestroke or breaststroke. You can even swim a few laps, seeking the aid of kickboards.
- For toning your legs, hips and belly, you can do some kickboard kicks. On the other hand, if you want to enhance your breathing skills, it is best to hop up and down in the water.
- If you are looking out for a high intensity-swimming stroke, then crawl or freestyle would be the perfect choice.
- Each and every time you perform a stroke, make it a point to stretch your body well.
- Practice breathing exercise in-between workouts. It is a great way to relax your body and make swimming a delightful experience.
- If you want to make sure that your energy levels stay high for a longer duration, make sure not to kick too hard in water.
- Whenever you are swimming, keep your head tilted in the forward direction, at such a level that water comes up to your hairline only.
- While doing a stroke, extend your arm in front, as much as it is possible. Now, clasp a handful of water and pull it back.
- Rolling with each stroke is very necessary while swimming. For instance, if you have extended your right arm, make sure to keep your right side lower than your left one.

Aragon, YouTube Sensation
Maria Aragon is a YouTube sensation who became famous overnight. Maria lives in Winnipeg , Canada , she is a fifth-grade student at the Isaac Brock School , and she is of Filipino descent
Maria has been singing in YouTube for 3 years, but fame started to be with her after Lady Gaga’s lead song for her second album, Born This Way, has been released. Maria quickly uploads a video of her singing the said single to her sister’s YouTube channel, February 16.
Lady Gaga is one of them and is captivated by Maria’s talent that she retweeted a link to the video to her eight million followers saying “Can’t stop crying watching this. This is why I make music. She is the future.” causing a sensation and launching Maria to instant international fame. The video garnered over 10 million views on YouTube in five days. In 6 days, her video, "Born This Way (Cover)" on Youtube had reached over 26 million views.
Thank’s to that Maria was catapulted to absolute fame and was even featured at Ellen where she performed Born This Way and got a standing ovation and at Good Morning America (where its anchor George Stephanopoulos handed her a gift certificate for six months of piano lessons).
Toronto's Virgin Radio 99.9 was among the first media outlets to reach out to Maria and attempted to fly Maria and her family to Toronto so that Maria could perform live on air. Those plans were cancelled due to the weather. During an interview on HOT 103 in Winnipeg , Lady Gaga called into the show to tell Maria how moved she had been by her performance. Lady Gaga then invited an already surprised Maria to perform "Born This Way" with her at The Monster Ball Tour concert in Toronto in March, an offer which Maria enthusiastically accepted. On March 3, 2011, Maria joined Lady Gaga on stage in front of a packed audience at the Air Canada Centre, where together they performed an acoustic duet of "Born this Way" with Maria sitting on Gaga's lap, playing piano and Lady Gaga working the pedals. At the end of the song, Gaga turned the microphone over to Maria who thanked the audience and Gaga for allowing her to perform.
Maria later rejoined Lady Gaga and her team of back up dancers for an up-tempo finale version of "Born this Way" culminating in a group hug and loud cheers from the audience.
Maria got her dream, to sing with one of her idols Lady Gaga, come true. With this out-breaking fame there’s no stopping her from getting to the top. We look forward to her bright future and we wish her luck.

TCO conducts series of meeting with the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company, Far Southeast Mining Company and Local Government Officials to settle this matter since Nov.6.

CASH ON THE TRASH
As years and population increases material wastes also increase especially on plastics, papers, bottles and tin cans. We mostly dump them anywhere no knowing that we are wasting money. Here are some tips to avoid dumping money:
1. Papers which are hard enough can be used as hard covers on books and on top appliances.
§ White papers are being bought their amount are higher than colored paper so separate the colored and no colored papers.
§ They can be used to make pot holders, curtains made from rolled papers and try using the back portion as scrap papers.
2.. Plastics can be cut and designed. They can become plastic flowers, figurines and lanterns by heating them.
- They are also sold but you need to press or squash them to make them heavier.
3. Bottles are designed and turned to flower vases, paper weights. They are also bought depending on their sizes and kind of bottle.
4. Tin cans are cut and designed then turn them into foot rag and lanterns. You can also flatten the them, place them side by side then paint and we can use them as flat iron sheet.
- They can be used as flower pots.
- They can be sold but you must clean them, strip the papers off then smash them to make them heavier.
You see, there are lot of things those garbage can turn to and they give money and something to do in leisure time.
HACHIKO
-Terry Joy Tip-ac
Plain white, lifeless, fluffy snow falls in a slow mo. An Akita dog kept staring as they drop at the ground , his eyes reflect eagerness which are fixed at the wooden door of the train station’s gate.
He knew that something’s amiss by the look at the street clock it’s pass seven but there’s no master coming instead a black Mitsubishi parked and emerged his master’s blonde haired daughter, “Hachi, let’s go home, you don’t need to wait it’s dad who is waiting for you”, she softly muzzled his fur and guided him to the car’s door.
Hachi slowly walked into the room and sat , he felt a tight knot lurking in his stomach and he looked at his master’s wife slowly wiping her tears and blankly looked at the darkened room. All he can hear is the dead silence as he curled and shut the night off.
The smell of the coffee filled the air, he blinked his eyes but it kept on drooping as if tons of cement are piled on it, he stood on his four feet and grumpily walked the hall, through the newly polished staircase, passing the kitchen and out from the gate. The rusty sound of the train kept coming louder and louder, Hachi looked back then walked straight to his sitting spot. Just like what he did for the past ten years on that snowy night, he’ll just wait, wait for his master.
He slouched his once stern shoulder and stared patiently again. A lady in her mid fifties approached with a net combed hair sat next to him and said, “Hachi, I’m grateful of you loving Parker devotedly after all these years …even though he’s gone you love him as much as I do.. So, let us wait for the for the next train”. They sat quietly until the train came, the street clock ticked and she kissed him in the forehead then left.
A familiar aura came to live when Hachi saw the arm length door opened widely and the creaking of it’s time damaged nails sounded slightly. A man with a nice curved forehead, slightly crooked nose and small eyes appeared and he wholly bellowed “Come Hachi, good boy… been waiting for me? Don’t worry I’ll be taking you with me this time”, he then childishly grinned which gives highlight to his baby blue eyes, he threw the peach colored ball. Hachi barked loudly then jumped from his sitting position and easily caught the ball despite his age in his mouth. His master hugged him and they walked away leaving tracks as the same snow covered them slowly.
JEJEMON THE CONQUEROR
CHRISTELE FAITH INGOSAN
Everyone’s looking at them. Some are crazy wanting to be one of them. Others are annoyed, wondering what’s wrong with them and how they spread their diseases.
Jejemon, the newest culture which is very popular today. It is said to be the new breed of of youngsters who developed their own language, written text and new fashion style.
Jejemon came from the combined word ‘jeje’, the way they laugh through text, and ‘–mon’ from the Japanese word which means monster.
They are most known from their slang languages, mix Filipino and English languages, short spelled words or more often called as wrong spelled words in texting.
Everywhere you go, your eyes can catch new style of dressing. What you see are jejemons’ fashion. They wear large caps known as jeje caps that suit baggy shorts or pants, jersey, single earring and chains which they think as cool.
You pass by someone whose music are irritating to the ears, well he is a jejemon. They love listening to music such as rocks and raps.
With just one look, they are being imitated . That’s their way of conquering.

Vegie-Pancit

A new pride of Tabio,Mankayan,Benguet was discovered for children and even for children-at-heart who would not like to eat vegetables. Now, this people can eat vegetable whenever they eat pancit because the noodles of the pancit is made out of varieties of vegetables .This vegetables are dried-up then made into flour and baked to noodles. This dark-green noodles in color attracts attention for vegetable haters and it is heavenly delicious too that would defeat the local, ordinary, tasteless and less nutritive noodles that we commonly use. This is an excellent idea for all of us especially to less fortunate people who can’t afford expensive noodles because this is very affordable. Life is made easier even to our food so let us support our nature’s gift especially to our health.
Edible and Affordable Foods
: Aime R. Sario
Pure Filipino foods are no doubt are one of the most affordable and edible foods that have ever been eaten. The foods are very simple which is made by additives, herbs and local market products specially those which are gathered in a fresh community. Ingredients are very cheap and common to the market. Most are chemically free from preservatives and other chemicals so it is interpreted that most Filipino foods are naturally processed and made. Even if it is made simple, it tastes flavorful for all types of people specially those who are unsatisfied if it is about food. You can make this food in your own home even if you’re not a professional cook or chef for these foods is specially known as “lutong-bahay”.

Teenage Pregnancy, kailan nga ba maititigil?
-Wylibeth Lumpias

RADIATION
-joanne liz ubando
that causes thousands of dead people, many destroyed properties and the most important of all is the
radiation that can affect the whole world and its people.
People now are aware of this.there are many effects of radiation, specifically the human
body these are:1.HAIR-The losing of hair quickly and in clumps occurs with radiation exposure at
200 rems or higher.2.BRAIN-Since brain cells do not reproduce, they won't be damaged directly
unless the exposure is 5,000 rems or greater. Like the heart, radiation kills nerve cells and small blood
vessels, and can cause seizures and immediate death.3.THYROID- The certain body parts are more
specifically affected by exposure to different types of radiation sources. The thyroid gland is susceptible
to radioactive iodine. In sufficient amounts, radioactive iodine can destroy all or part of the thyroid. By
taking potassium iodide, one can reduce the effects of exposure.4.BLOOD SYSTEM-When a person
is exposed to around 100 rems, the blood's lymphocyte cell count will be reduced, leaving the victim
more susceptible to infection. This is often refered to as mild radiation sickness. Early symptoms of
radiation sickness mimic those of flu and may go unnoticed unless a blood count is done.According to
data from Hiroshima and Nagaski, show that symptoms may persist for up to 10 years and may also have
an increased long-term risk for leukemia and lymphoma. 5.HEART- Intense exposure to radioactive
material at 1,000 to 5,000 rems would do immediate damage to small blood vessels and probably cause
heart failure and death directly.6.GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT- Radiation damage to the
intestinal tract lining will cause nausea, bloody vomiting and diarrhea. This is occurs when the victim's
exposure is 200 rems or more. The radiation will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly.
These including blood, GI tract, reproductive and hair cells, and harms their DNA and RNA of surviving
cells.7.REPRODUCTIVE TRACT- Because reproductive tract cells divide rapidly, these areas of
the body can be damaged at rem levels as low as 200. Long-term, some radiation sickness victims will
become sterile.
PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF RADIATION SIDE EFFECTS
The development of more effective cancer treatments requires that new and innovative therapies
be evaluated with cancer patients. Clinical trials are studies that evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs
or treatment strategies. Future progress in the prevention and management of radiation side effects will
result from the continued evaluation of new treatments in clinical trials. Participation in a clinical trial
may offer patients access to better treatments and advance the existing knowledge about treatment of this
cancer. Patients who are interested in participating in a clinical trial should discuss the risks and benefits
of clinical trials with their physician. Areas of active investigation aimed at improving the prevention and
management of radiation side effects include the following:
Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF, palifermin): This is a growth factor that has
been shown to stimulate growth of epithelial cells, which make up the mucus membrane and line
the mouth and throat. Keratinocyte growth factor is currently being tested in patients to prevent
chemotherapy damage to the mucus membranes of the gastrointestinal tract.Antioxidants: The
antioxidant agent Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) has shown promise in reducing early and
late radiation-induced tissue injury. The patients who received SOD experienced fewer rectal
problems and less bladder inflammation and skin toxicity than those who received
placebo.Interleukin 11: Interleukin 11 is a growth factor that is similar but not identical to what
the body normally produces. Interleukin 11 has been approved by the FDA to stimulate platelet
recovery in patients with low platelet counts due to chemotherapy. Clinical trials are currently
underway to determine if Interleukin 11 will prevent side effects, especially to the mucus
membranes and gastrointestinal tract, associated with chemotherapy and radiation
therapy.Prostaglandins: Prostoglandins are a group of compounds that affect the healing of
inflammation and wounds. Misoprostol is a prostaglandin that is effective in treating
complications that arise in patients with prostate cancer who receive radiation treatment.
Inflammation of the rectum (radiation proctitis) is a known complication of radiation therapy in
the treatment of prostate cancer. Available medical treatment is usually ineffective and has
focused on relieving symptoms after damage has occurred. One clinical study evaluated the
effects of misoprostol in patients undergoing radiation therapy treatment for prostate cancer. In
the study, nine patients received misoprostol rectal suppositories and seven patients received
placebo. The results indicated that misoprostol rectal suppositories significantly reduced acute
and chronic radiation proctitis symptoms in patients receiving radiation therapy for prostate
cancer.
Sustainable Mining

Joanne Liz Ubando
Mining is one of the major source of living in Mankayan and sustainable mining is
important to the community and its stakeholders.
Minerals are essential for modern living, and mining is still the primary method of their
extraction. To date, it appears that the main constraints to sustainability in the mining sector
derive from the ever-increasing demand for mined resources, the consumption of resources
(mostly energy and water) needed to extract and process metals, and the increasing pollution
generated by the extraction process. This holds true for both large-scale, often multinational
corporate, operations as well as for small-scale or artisanal ventures.
In the 20th century, the extraction of construction minerals grew by a factor of 34,
while that of ores and industrial minerals by a factor of 27. This growth significantly outpaced a
quadrupling of world population and a 24-fold increase in GDP.
While the sustainability of extractive industries varies, these operations generally
remain associated with a range of environmental and social impacts negatively affecting local
communities. Given the importance of mining to revenue and employment in some developing
countries, as well as the non-renewable nature of many mined resources, the sustainability of
this industry and the efficient use of its resources for development remain crucial.
How to maximize the development benefits of mining while improving the environmental
and social sustainability of the mining sector was first addressed in the Johannesburg Plan of
Implementation (JPOI), where the following three priority areas were identified:
1. Address the environmental, economic, health and social impacts and benefits of mining
throughout their life cycle, including workers’ health and safety;
2. Enhance the participation of stakeholders, including local and indigenous communities
and women;
3. Foster sustainable mining practices through the provision of financial, technical and
capacity-building support to developing countries and countries with economies.

Sustainable Mining to Maintain Mankayan Environment
Gold Fields, the 4th largest gold mining company worldwide has started its community assessment and ocular visit at Mankayan, Benguet.
In relation to this, citizens started reacting in different ways. Some are in favor while others are not. It is true that having the company operate here would generate employment in the locality and will also increase income of the district through tax. However, mining definitely damages the environment in the long run. Large area of land will be affected and utilized starting from blasting, preparation of tailing ponds & tailing disposals, the crusher plant area, stockpile area for ore materials & waste materials, etc. Chemicals such as mercury and cyanide used in mining will impose health hazards to plants, animals and human. Mining can cause erosion and landslide that will vastly cause death and destroy surrounding environment like farms, rivers or any bodies of water. Mining chemicals also makes soil not suitable for planting. It will probably worsen the erosion we already had experienced which, until now is thought to be primarily caused by the underground activities.
Goldfields connote world-class responsible mining, and their practices are guided by its Sustainable Development Framework which includes Occupational health and safety; Human Rights; Ethics and Corporate Governance; Risk Management; Environment; Material Stewardship and supply chain management; Community and Indigenous People; and Stakeholder Engagement.
Through responsible mining, the negative outcomes we had feared could possibly be reduced or may even be prevented. In this way, we can have the benefits that mining can bring. The only step needed is the proper information dissemination for the people in the community.
